If You Don’t Love It, Let It Go! Simplify And Improve Your Wardrobe

Body Changes and Wardrobe Issues

I have been feeling a little bit crazed about my wardrobe. I had a baby, and I don’t run like I used to, so my body has changed a lot. That’s just what happens. Clothes over time wear out.

I’ve gone shopping multiple times recently and come home with absolutely nothing. I just didn’t fall in love with anything that I found.

My new rule that I wanted to share with you is that if you don’t love it, don’t hold on to it. Now, this does not have to necessarily just apply to clothes, but I’m going to apply it to my closet so I can illustrate this concept.

Cleaning Out The Closet

I have a bunch of bags of clothes that I’m going to get rid of, donate, or trash. This giant bag is as tall as my hip. This is a humongous bag, I think it’s one of those giant Bed Bath & Beyond bags. I have two other bags that are overflowing as well with clothes I’m donating.  Then I have one bag that I’m going to throw away because it’s just it’s too worn out to donate.

My closet is kind of bare compared to what I had before. It’s not like I haven’t ever cleaned out my closet. I donated a lot of stuff before we moved cross-country then I donated even more stuff when we left to come back West. So it’s not that I haven’t donated things, but I have this problem, I hold onto things.

I had things in my closet that I bought in middle school! That is why I am loving this rule. If I don’t love it, if it doesn’t bring me joy, then why am I holding on to it?

I started applying that rule to all the pieces in my closet, thinking, “oh I haven’t worn this in so many years… but it’s so cute and maybe it’ll be a thing again… so I’m going to hold onto it.” Even though I haven’t worn it in five years and I don’t have any idea what I would even wear it with.

It’s hard! It’s so sentimental. But you know, why is that piece in your closet? To be a part of your wardrobe? Or is it there for decoration?

I’m not putting these pieces in my closet to decorate my closet.  Sure it’d be nice to have a fancy looking closet, but that is not the purpose of the clothes in my closet. That’s not what I need. That’s not what makes me feel good when I dress myself every day.

The Mindset Shift It Takes To Let It Go

So I started pulling all these clothes off of these hangers that I’ve been holding onto for so so long, and guess what? I started feeling so free! It was incredible! It’s amazing! This feeling that I started having that I can’t even describe to you. I started letting go of these things that are taking hold on part of my life and they’re not bringing me any joy! All they’re doing is taking up space in my life. They’re creating baggage. They’re creating a hassle. They’re creating unnecessary clutter in my life. It might look pretty in my closet but it is just a hassle.

When I get rid of those, I may only have a few shirts left. But I don’t really care if I wear the same five shirts every single week, if that means I’m wearing shirts that I love, that I feel good about wearing, that make me feel good about myself! If you’re wearing something that you love, that makes you feel good, then who cares if you wore it last week!

I don’t know why I get into this kind of thing where I need to wear something different every day for who knows how many weeks on end before I go back to the beginning of the rotation. That’s just not doing me any good. Then you have that long before you have to do laundry. Guess what, that probably means sometimes I go that long without doing my laundry, because I haven’t made it back to the start of my clothing rotation. How much frustration is that creating in my life?

I started feeling so free when I started letting go of these clothing items that I’ve been holding on to. It is just amazing to think that I could be wearing just these few shirts that I have and feel so much better about myself. Not that I don’t already feel good about myself, but what you wear has an effect. That’s how you express yourself.

Don’t Waste Time Or Space In Your Life

When I do start finding pieces that I want to add back into my wardrobe I’m going to keep that same rule. I’m going to tell myself, if I don’t love this, I’m not even going to buy it. Why would I buy that shirt, even if it’s a dollar. I’ve done that too multiple times. I find clearance, and something is a dollar, and it’s pretty cute but you know what, I probably won’t wear it. Or maybe I don’t have anything to wear it with. So what good is it going to do for me to spend a dollar on that item?

“Why not, it’s a dollar, it’s not going to be a waste of my money, so why not? Maybe I will like it more than I think that I do.”

But that has never ever ever been the case!

This can apply to so many things. This is so incredible. If you don’t love it why are you holding on to it?

Something in your life could be taking the place of that thing that you don’t love and bringing you joy. You can fill your life with all these things that you love. I’m not saying you have to go out and buy this fancy new wardrobe. That’s not the point. The point is, you need to create a life that you love. If you don’t create a life that you love you’re wasting your life!

You are here on this earth because you deserve to be happy. You deserve to enjoy this time on this earth. You deserve to grow as a person and become someone absolutely incredible, that is what you’re meant to be. Every single one of you, don’t you doubt it for a second! So don’t waste your life on pieces of clothing, on holding grudges, on any kind of habit that you have that’s taking the place of something else that could be bringing you joy. You might not know what it is, but until you get rid of that thing there’s not room for you to add in that thing that’s going to bring you joy.

That just really hit me so hard and I had to share it with you.

I hope you found value in it and I hope you can apply that to your life. Because you deserve to live a life that you love.
